How Emotion Recognition can improve our lives

Imagine waking up and when you look in the mirror, it could sense how excited you are about the day ahead. Also, imagine getting into a car and if you’re feeling down, it could suggest a song that will lift your spirit and a more scenic route for your listening pleasure. That’s the potential of emotion aware computing. These are devices that can detect, interpret and adjust to human emotions. So besides using such devices for personal use, how else can emotion recognition technology be applied to improve our lives? Before going further, let’s first get an understanding of how emotion recognition technology works.


Detecting human behavior is one of the first steps to creating emotion aware technology. We need to be able to detect subtle changes in facial expressions, in body language, and in speech patterns. In order to do this, the AI needs to be given a huge number of examples which have been painstakingly labeled by humans. The more diverse these examples are, the more quickly and more accurately the computer will learn.


How does Emotion recognition work?

Sightcorp’s Emotion Recognition software works by analyzing video content from a camera and tracking the faces in the feed. Using this software, we can use the texture and information from the video in order to predict the facial expressions that are present. Our software can identify 7 basic emotions based on the position and movement of facial muscles. Each analysis produces a confidence score for different types of emotion: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, surprise, sadness, and neutral. The overall mood can be estimated with accuracy up to 92%.

Such conditions are extremely hard to monitor even if someone’s in a treatment program. This technology could be used to monitor the progress and recovery from such a condition. Something that would be useful for clinicians and for loved ones.

Automotive – Another is the automotive industry, as emotion recognition software in cars can enhance the overall user experience while also improving car safety. By analyzing the mood of the driver, this technology can help prevent accidents by sending signals to the driver to stop the car, use the breaks, or change the music or temperature for the better.
